How to Quote and Pick Best Texas Plan

Raise your hand if picking a health plan is favorite thing to do.

Thought so!

There's some good news though these days in the form of thousands of dollars in subsidies that bring down your cost!

Many people think they won't qualify but we can help make sure you're getting the most available to you.  It's complicated after all.

The quote tool is above but let's provide some general guidance to get you started on the right footing.

How To Pick The Best Covered Texas Plan

Here's how to choose the best Texas Exchange plan for your situation:

  • Run your on or off-exchange quote in a new window here
  • Determine if you're eligible for a subsidy
  • Find the best plan level (bronze, silver, gold, or platinum) for your needs and budget
  • Make sure your doctors are included and that you like the type of network

Let's look at each section in more detail.

Run The Texas Individual and Family Quote With Tax Credit above.

The quote is important since we're comparing plans and their COSTS!

It's a critical piece of the puzzle.

Keep in mind that benefits are standardized from carrier to carrier.

This means a Gold level plan will walk and talk the same as another Gold plan.  That makes it much easier.

Maybe the most important.

Tax Credit Eligibility And Picking A Plan

It's THE deciding factor right now.

# 1 rule is to figure out if we're eligible for a subsidy towards our choice of coverage.

The subsidy is based on income estimate for the year and size of household. You can find more information on the subsidy here. The income piece can get tricky. That's where we can help at no cost to you!

It's the AGI on the 1040 tax form for this year (next April's filing) based on household (everyone that files together on a 1040 whether enrolling or not).  This addresses 99% of people out there.

That's the basic rule but it quickly gets complicated fast so reach out to us any complicated situation at help@texasplans.com

Comparing The Plan Levels

It's standardized now.

We have the following plan levels:

  • Bronze (one regular and maybe one HSA)
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum

We'll also break out the HSA plan to understand how it works.

This section is usually the most difficult for people.

In fact, it dictates the majority of our conversations.

Section 3 - Choosing A Plan With YOUR Doctors

Once we figured out the subsidy and plan level piece, we need to make sure we like the doctors.

This is a big deal now since 2014.

The networks are about 1/3rd smaller and we have to make sure our doctors are in the network.

We also need to like the network type.

There are EPO, PPO, and HMO networks.

compare california health insurance networks

They work very differently and we can walk through how to compare these options against the premium difference.

It's the final step!

Doctor networks are available through the On-Exchange Quote tool but we also explain how to ask your doctors if they participate.
